Mayor Romualdez visits LNU; tackles city transformation

by Reylan C. Delantar

The City Mayor of Tacloban, Hon. Alfred S. Romualdez, visited Leyte Normal University for a forum held at LNU Student Center Mini- Theater on August 14, 2008, emphasizing the re-classification of Tacloban City from a component city to a highly urbanized city.

Romualdez cited the minimum requirements for a city to pass the qualifying standards to become a highly urbanized city as stipulated in the Local Government Code. A city must have at least Php 50,000,000.00 annual income and a population of 200,000.

Mayor Romualdez said further that as a component city, Tacloban is still dependent  on the province and is under the supervision of the governor, but the transformation of Tacloban to a highly urbanized city would separate the city from the supervision of the province and will be under the supervision of Malacañang instead.

He also discussed some advantages if Tacloban City would become highly urbanized.

“Aside from the business investors who will be entering the city, it will be entitled to have one policeman for every 500 citizens, compared to one policeman for every 1000 citizens if it will remain a component city.”
