With a common sight set on the crucial role of education in developing human capacities to meet the ever-expanding challenges of today, the education leaders, representing 45 institutions from 16 countries, all agreed in the increasing demand of, and the growing role of teachers in society. Dr. Evelyn C. Cruzada signed the document on behalf of the Leyte Normal University last May 22, 2009.
Among the key points cited in the joint stand are: Education is critical to the economic and social well being of societies as it enhances human capacities to create a sustainable future; The represented universities will seek opportunities and means to enhance educational access and quality for the youth; Prepare high quality teachers, support their continuing development and provide opportunities for lifelong learning; Contribute to regional and global education communities through research and development activities; and Collaborate as partners to promote academic exchange and share exemplary practices for the development of educational systems and teacher education in the region and beyond. The conference also proposed the idea of developing an Asian normal university, which when realized, could serve as a central core of the teacher education system in Asia.
