Juaton The Joint Regional Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) and the Philippine Society of Information Technology Students (PSITS) conducted a seminar in CASA Anson Plaza on March 4, 2009 regarding the advancement of Information Technology (IT) education in the Philippines. The seminar was participated in by students, instructors and IT professionals in Leyte. The program began with an invocation led by Ms. Raquel Makabenta, PSITE Committee Chair on Program. The Philippine National anthem followed and a welcome address was delivered by Dir. Ma. Rita Castillon-Ortiz, Ofiicer-in-charge (OIC) Commission on Higher Education (CHED) From then on, the seminar officially began with topics concerning IT job opportunities. The speakers were Mr. Dennis P. Tagmolila, Aspire/Aegis Cebu City Senior Manager and Mr. Dean Reynald Jay F. Hidalgo of Collegio de Dagupan.

Pajares The Leyte Normal University AB Communication Society together with the MAPEH Circle, Math Students Society, Tourism Circle and English Circle and in cooperation with LC Asuncion and Sons, Inc, and Joebz PC and Headquarters Internet Café sponsored a one-night concert on March 6, 2009 in line with the university’s 88th Foundation Celebration. Held at the ORC Quadrangle, the said event was hosted by Kenneth Severin Bagangan and Aiza Tagayong and featured some of LNU’s most talented groups and students in various performances depicting their ‘say’ on the present social issues in the country and the world. In a post show interview with the An Lantawan, ABCom Society President and LNU Concert ’09 Executive Producer Denise Bienne Mendoza disclosed that the concept for the concert started with a suggestion from their adviser for them to come up with a production showcasing the different social and political issues that the Filipino people face nowadays. |

The Leyte Normal University will celebrate its 88th Foundation Anniversary on March 6-7, 2009 with the theme: “LNU: 88 Years of Committed Service”. The two day festivities will have a parade in the morning of March 6 through selected streets of Tacloban City as its kick-off activity. This will be followed by an Opening Ceremony highlighted by an Open Field Festival. Other activities on the first day include the launching of “Sinirangan” - Culture and Arts Development Center, Academic and Musical Competitions, Japanese music festival, Dayaw Awards and a Student Concert. |

This School Year 2008-2009 saw the hiring of two new faculty members of the Social Science Unit. Mr. Voltaire Q. Oyzon is a product of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) having earned his double degree of Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences major in Economics and Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts in the said college. He finished his masters, Master of Arts in English here in LNU. He’s presently working as staff member of Mr. Jose Lianza in the LNU Sinirangan - Culture and Arts Development Center. The other new face is Mr. Paul C. Cipres who is also a graduate of the UP in the Visayas Tacloban College with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences major in Political Science. He’s finishing his MA in Philippine Studies at the Asian Development Foundation College. |

Cairo LNU, Tacloban City- SUGA Party candidates reaped eleven seats in the Supreme Student Council Elections on F ebruary 18, 2009 with Noel Talacay as the new president. 413 votes differed between the two presidentiables in this year’s election. Talacay garnered 1360 votes over Christian Sumalinog’s 947 votes. Trisha Dawn Daffon, the incumbent SSC Vice-President will continue her term with votes of 1436 over her rival, Mylene Alegre of the KSP Party, who gained 933 votes only. Aiza Tagayong reaped 1545 votes, making her the secretary-elect, over the out-going SSC Secretary, Mary Grace Valle, who got 805 votes only. |

by Carmela M. Samonte The College of Management and Entrepreneurship held a 2-day cooking demonstration named “Gourmet Cooking with Chef Mark Uy” last February 4-5, 2009 at the LNU cafeteria.  The two-day event was divided into three sessions: 1st day morning for HRM students, 1st day afternoon for THRM students, and 2nd day morning for HAE students. The event started with a short program. Dr. Marcial M. Monge, Dean-College of Management and Entrepreneurship noted in his opening words, “This cooking demonstration is part of the continuous activities sustained by the behavior of the university, as well as the college, to provide resources to students to be updated of whatever is happening outside the region.” |

by Rafael Greggorre T. Pajares February 12-13, 2009 – The Leyte Normal University community recently celebrated the Annual Juniors-Seniors Promenade at the Tacloban City People’s Center. The two-day event was momentous as it gave the seniors a chance to pass on their responsibilities to the juniors who will be following their footsteps. Featuring the traditional candle light and bequeathal ceremony on both nights, the said event was attended by juniors and seniors from the different colleges of the university together with the university officials, faculty, class advisers and guests. |
