Project LIGHT Brightens Physics Education in Leyte Through Innovative Optics Instruction

“Let there be LIGHT” was more than just the title of a workshop—it became a shared mission among physics educators committed to making science learning more engaging, hands-on, and meaningful for students across Leyte.

Held from May 27–29, 2026 at the Palo Campus of Leyte Normal University, Project LIGHT: Learning Innovations for Greater Hands-on Teaching gathered 26 Junior High School and Senior High School physics teachers from 12 participating schools for an intensive Geometric Optics Workshop designed to strengthen both content mastery and classroom practice.

The extension initiative, spearheaded by the LNU Science Unit and the MAED Science Graduate Program in collaboration with the Ateneo de Manila Physics Department and the Province of Leyte, focused on equipping teachers with learner-centered and experiment-driven approaches in teaching geometric optics. Through guided lectures, collaborative discussions, laboratory investigations, and hands-on activities, participants explored concepts such as reflection, refraction, image formation, lenses, mirrors, and optical instruments.

Leading the workshop was Prof. Ivan C. Culaba of the Ateneo de Manila Physics Department, with Prof. Reynerio B. Mendoza of the LNU Science Unit serving as project leader. Together, they emphasized the importance of inquiry-based instruction and practical experimentation in improving student understanding of physics.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the provision of optics kits and instructional resources that teachers can immediately use in their classrooms. The training also created opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among educators from different schools and divisions, fostering a growing community of practice dedicated to strengthening science education in the region.

The workshop culminated in a closing program attended by Dr. Jonas A. Villas, Vice President for Research, Innovation, Extension, and Internationalization of Leyte Normal University, and Ms. Grace G. Villanueva, Chief Education Supervisor of the Curriculum Implementation Division of the Schools Division of Leyte. In their messages, both officials commended the participants for their dedication to professional growth and emphasized the vital role of continuous teacher development in improving science education.
