SDG 6 - CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

6.2 - Water consumption per person

To advance responsible water stewardship and efficient resource management across our facilities, Leyte Normal University (LNU) systematically tracks and manages annual water consumption per capita.

Calculated based on our total campus population of full-time equivalent students, faculty, and staff, this metric enables us to evaluate consumption patterns and optimize operational efficiency. Through targeted infrastructure upgrades, water-saving fixtures, conservation awareness campaigns, and sustainable facility practices, our institution remains committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and ensuring conscientious water usage throughout our campus operations.

6.2.1 - Water consumption tracking

Leyte Normal University (LNU) sources its treated water from the Prime Water Leyte Metro (PWLM), outsourcing the entire water treatment process to ensure a safe and reliable supply. PWLM handles the purification stages, including filtration and chlorination, delivering treated water that meets the university’s needs for drinking, sanitation, and operations.

Water Consumption Per Person

According to a comprehensive 2024 monitoring report issued by the university’s Physical Plants and Facilities Office, LNU’s median water consumption was determined to be between 4,100 and 4,200 cubic meters. This measurement represents the university’s complete, aggregate consumption, factoring in the total volume drawn from all available water sources.

2024 Water Consumption Monitoring Report

During the 2nd Semester of S.Y. 2024-2025, the university had a total campus population of 8,273 people, comprising 7,903 students and 370 employees. Based on the total median monthly consumption (4,100 to 4,200 m³), this translates to an estimated water usage of between 0.4956 and 0.5077 cubic meters per person, per month.

Volume of Water Used in the University: Inbound (Treated/Extracted water)

In 2024, LNU’s water distribution system operated at approximately 95% efficiency. This means the university effectively consumed 95% of the treated water supplied by Prime Water for key operations, including drinking, sanitation, and irrigation.

The remaining 5% is attributed to water loss from leakages in aging pipes and other system inefficiencies. The university has made significant efforts to address this, conducting regular inspections and upgrading infrastructure where necessary. Outsourcing water treatment to PWLM allows LNU to concentrate its resources on optimizing internal water distribution and minimizing such wastage.

Accounting for this loss, the university’s actual effective consumption for inbound treated water is recorded as between 3,895 and 3,990 cubic meters.
