SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
7.4 - Energy and the community
Actively extending our institutional expertise beyond campus boundaries, our university leads community outreach initiatives that empower local stakeholders to adopt renewable energy sources and minimize environmental impacts. Through technical guidance, educational workshops, and collaborative sustainability partnerships, we assist surrounding communities and regional organizations in transitioning to clean energy solutions and implementing low-carbon practices.
By fostering local capacity for sustainable energy management, our institution serves as a regional catalyst for ecological resilience and environmental protection.
7.4.1 - Local community outreach for energy efficiency
Clean Energy Goals
As part of its deep commitment to sustainability, Leyte Normal University is actively engaging students and local communities in innovative programs that highlight resource efficiency. These initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability, connecting the dots between waste reduction and the broader goals of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
The university’s philosophy is that a truly energy-efficient campus is one that also manages its resources wisely. By reducing, reusing, and repurposing materials, LNU is actively cutting down on the “embodied energy”—the energy required to produce, transport, and dispose of goods—thereby lowering its overall environmental footprint.
This commitment is brought to life through several key outreach programs:
-
From “Basura to Ganda”: Creative Paper Repurposing: A prime example is the “Creative Paper Beads Training and Workshop: Basura to Ganda,“ held in October 2024. This eco-friendly workshop empowered BS Entrepreneurship students to transform discarded paper into unique, handcrafted beads. This initiative not only fosters environmental awareness and responsibility but directly demonstrates how repurposing waste materials can prevent the energy-intensive process of new paper production and waste disposal.
-
Innovative Handicraft Production: Similarly, LNU supports a handicraft production program that gives new life to recycled cloth. By turning scrap fabrics into valuable decorative items, the university champions waste reduction and the reuse of resources. This program effectively minimizes the environmental and energy impact associated with textile disposal and manufacturing, turning potential waste into a sustainable resource.
-
Community Education and Research: LNU’s commitment extends to its academic and research functions. Faculty-led studies, such as the “Mangrove Awareness of Haiyan-Stricken Residents” project, aim to develop effective communication methods to educate local communities on the critical importance of conservation. Through these hands-on workshops and research-based outreach, Leyte Normal University is proving that sustainability is a interconnected effort. By promoting resource efficiency and innovative recycling, LNU is not only reducing waste but is also making a tangible contribution to a cleaner, more energy-conscious future.
