SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

SDG 7 - AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY

7.3 - Energy use density

To optimize energy efficiency and promote sustainable infrastructure management across our campus, Leyte Normal University (LNU) systematically evaluates total energy usage relative to building floor space. This metric encompasses all energy owned, controlled, or consumed across institutional facilities, academic operations, campus events, and administrative activities.

By tracking energy intensity across our physical footprint, our institution identifies key opportunities for targeted efficiency upgrades, minimizes operational resource demands, and advances our commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

7.3.1 - Energy usage per sqm

As part of its deep commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Leyte Normal University meticulously tracks the core components of its energy efficiency. The university has established a formal process for documenting its total energy consumption and total floor space, which are the two critical data points for calculating its “Energy Use Density” (energy usage per square meter).

Tracking Total Energy Consumption

LNU actively monitors its electricity consumption as a foundational step in its sustainability and carbon management process.

For the 2023 fiscal year, the university’s total electricity usage was 1,048,686 kWh.

This “Total energy used” metric serves two key purposes:

  • It is the baseline figure used to calculate the university’s carbon emissions from electricity (808.8962 metric tons for 2023).

  • It allows for detailed analysis of consumption patterns, such as the per-capita energy use. With a total campus population of 8,330, LNU has determined its average electricity usage to be 125.89 kWh per person.

Documenting Total Floor Space

To complete the “Energy usage per sqm” metric, LNU maintains a comprehensive documentation of its “University floor space.” This includes a detailed breakdown of all buildings across the Main Campus, Youngfield Campus, and the San Isidro Satellite Campus.

A prime example of this detailed tracking is the documentation of its “Smart Building” facilities, which alone account for 6,247.73 square meters of floor space, broken down as follows:

  • Administration Building: 1,874.381 m²

  • Human Resource Development Center: 3,145.81 m²

  • Learning Resource Center: 1,227.539 m²

The Foundation for Energy Use Density

By systematically documenting both the total energy used (the numerator) and the total university floor space (the denominator), LNU has established the foundational data for calculating its “Energy usage per sqm.” This key performance indicator is essential for monitoring the effectiveness of its “Smart Building” upgrades and other energy-saving policies, ensuring the university remains on track with its long-term sustainability goals.
