In alignment with the global observance of the International Day of Zero Waste on March 30, Leyte Normal University (LNU) proudly introduces its Integrated Environmental Management and Resilience Policy (IEMRP). Established by the United Nations to address the “triple planetary crisis” of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, Zero Waste Day calls for urgent action to shift toward sustainable consumption and circular economies. By institutionalizing the IEMRP, LNU joins this international movement, recognizing that responsible waste management is a fundamental pillar of environmental stewardship and global resilience.

Proposed by LNU’s Sustainability, Climate, and Disaster Resilience Office, the IEMRP serves as a comprehensive framework to guide the university toward a greener future. This policy was developed in direct response to the escalating threats of plastic pollution and unmanaged waste, which are known to exacerbate urban flooding and climate-induced disasters in vulnerable regions like Tacloban City and Eastern Visayas. Through this initiative, the university commits to a structured approach in managing its ecological footprint while fostering a campus environment that prioritizes safety and sustainability.

Starting February 9, 2026, the policy will be strictly implemented across all university operations. This mandate includes a rigorous ban on single-use plastics—such as bags, straws, and styrofoam—and requires the active participation of the entire LNU community in the LIMPYO Framework. By enforcing mandatory waste segregation and promoting eco-friendly alternatives like reusable containers and biodegradable materials, the university ensures that its transition to a zero-waste campus is both immediate and non-negotiable.

Beyond waste reduction, the IEMRP integrates advanced climate adaptation strategies, including the adoption of solar energy systems and the development of biogas production from biodegradable waste. The university is also committed to institutionalizing rainwater harvesting, flood drainage, and tree-planting programs to mitigate heat stress and flooding. By embedding Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) into its teaching, research, and operations, LNU ensures that its infrastructure and academic community remain resilient in the face of environmental challenges.

Leyte Normal University affirms its role as an environmental steward by applying these regulations to all students, faculty, staff, and external partners. Managed by the IEMRP Committee, the policy ensures transparency and accountability through regular monitoring and annual financial planning. This commitment to the IEMRP not only fulfills national legal mandates but also secures LNU’s position as a leader in sustainability, proving that the university is dedicated to a cleaner, safer, and more resilient future for the next generation.
