LNU Researchers Receive Project LUYON Research for Action Grants

PALO, LEYTE, PHILIPPINES – Awarding of Research Grants for the Project LUYON Research for Action Awarding Ceremony at Felipina Hall, Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DEPDev) Regional Office VIII, Palo, Leyte.

Leyte Normal University (LNU) researchers were recognized as grant recipients during the Project LUYON Research for Action Awarding Ceremony on October 2, 2026, at Felipina Hall, DEPDev Regional Office VIII, Palo, Leyte.

LNU President Dr. Gil Nicetas B. Villarino joined the University’s grant recipients and research team members during the ceremony.

Two LNU research projects received grants:

  • “Hydrological Alterations in the Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatland: Implications for Vector Habitats and Public Health in Adjacent Communities,” led by Dr. Myra A. Abayon, with Prof. Facundo Rey Ladiao, Ms. Jea Vesera, Ms. Jaysa C. Haropohop, and undergraduate students.
  • “Community-Based Identification, Rehabilitation, and Smart Fire Prevention Monitoring of Kaingin-Degraded Peatland Areas in the Leyte Sab-a Basin,” led by Mr. Wayne David Padullon, with Prof. Reynerio B. Mendoza, Mr. Danilo L. Sajorda, Jr., Mr. Richie Cabangon, and Mr. Xerxes Montes.

Funded by Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA), Project LUYON is a four-year initiative led by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) and partners to advance peatland conservation, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity protection, policy development, and sustainable livelihoods.

Through these grants, LNU strengthens research that addresses pressing environmental and community challenges, translating knowledge into meaningful local action.
