1.4 - Community anti-poverty programmes

As stewards of significant institutional resources, Leyte Normal University (LNU) recognizes its responsibility to actively support the wider community in tackling poverty and economic disadvantage.

This section highlights our dedicated outreach programs, assistance activities, and university-backed partnerships designed to relieve poverty and promote socio-economic resilience. By extending our expertise, resources, and operational support to both university-led and community-driven initiatives, we remain committed to empowering our surrounding neighborhoods and creating sustainable impact beyond campus boundaries.

1.4.3 - Programmes for services access

Leyte Normal University’s Programs for Services Access are designed to ensure equitable access to essential services—including healthcare, education, counseling, and financial aid—by removing barriers and providing resources that support the holistic well-being and academic success of all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Extension Projects for 2024

The extension projects of Leyte Normal University contribute to the eradication of poverty by equipping students, educators, parents, and local communities with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed for sustainable personal and economic development. Programs like SJEST AGAPE enrich priestly formation while integrating social science perspectives to broaden career and service capabilities. Early childhood interventions through Project Boxskwelahan ensure holistic development for young learners, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Economic empowerment initiatives, such as Project THE BAY, provide entrepreneurship and business training for students and local enterprises, promoting financial self-reliance and livelihood generation. Literacy-focused initiatives like Karunungan ay Mahalaga, Sa Pagbasa Makikita improve reading skills and foster a culture of learning, which enhances employability and social mobility. Finally, youth development projects such as PABALHAS promote discipline, teamwork, and physical well-being, supporting holistic growth and long-term social resilience. Collectively, these initiatives address structural and educational barriers, empowering individuals and communities to break cycles of poverty.

SJEST AGAPE

Enriching Priestly Formation through Social Science Integration

This project aims to deepen priestly formation by integrating social science perspectives into the seminarians’ development. Through the expertise of faculty from diverse disciplines such as research, language, etiquette, and library science, participants engage in seminars, workshops, and mentoring sessions. This holistic approach equips future priests not only with spiritual guidance skills but also with academic and social competencies, enabling them to serve communities effectively and contribute to social welfare initiatives. By fostering leadership and community engagement, the program indirectly supports poverty alleviation through education, guidance, and local development.

Project Boxskwelahan: An Enrichment Program for Young Children

Building a Strong Foundation for Early Learners

Project Boxskwelahan provides young children with interactive and engaging learning experiences designed to promote cognitive, social, and emotional development. Through educational resources, hands-on activities, and enrichment sessions, children are guided toward holistic growth that supports curiosity, creativity, and foundational skills. By equipping young learners with essential competencies early on, the project strengthens their future academic success and potential for economic self-sufficiency, contributing to poverty reduction in the long term.

Project THE BAY (Tourism, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship’s Business Advancement Yield)

Empowering Students and Local Entrepreneurs

Project THE BAY focuses on advancing business strategies and entrepreneurship in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Through workshops on digital marketing, customer service, sustainable tourism practices, and entrepreneurship, students and local business owners are empowered to innovate and adapt to industry trends. By enhancing business capabilities and promoting self-reliance, the program supports income generation and economic development in local communities, directly contributing to poverty alleviation.

Karunungan ay Mahalaga, Sa Pagbasa Makikita

Fostering Literacy and Lifelong Learning

This program aims to improve reading proficiency among students and cultivate a culture of literacy. Activities include the development of age-appropriate reading materials, teacher training on effective literacy instruction, and community engagement initiatives to promote reading habits. By strengthening literacy skills, the project enhances academic achievement and equips students with essential tools for higher education and employment, directly supporting pathways out of poverty.

PABALHAS: Basic Basketball and Volleyball Training Program

Youth Development through Sports and Life Skills

PABALHAS promotes holistic youth development by offering structured training in basketball and volleyball. Beyond physical fitness and skill development, the program emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Engaging young individuals in constructive recreational activities fosters life skills and social resilience, preparing them for future opportunities while promoting healthy lifestyles. By building confidence, discipline, and social cohesion, the project indirectly contributes to reducing vulnerability to poverty among youth.
